2016 was a big year for new cafes in Zurich. One of the exciting new openings in hip Kreis 4 was that of a cute little café called COFFEE. It’s all in the name really – a simple word we all love, that we connect with, that we have an opinion about, and that we enjoy when we get it and miss when we don’t. Yes, just like any relationship, when we encounter something different we are curious, we may have our fears, our doubts, we compromise, sometimes we even reject, and with each new coffee we learn. Geez all that from one word..
Right, let’s focus back on COFFEE – the café. This cute little café is the work of long time friends Shem Leupin and Thomas Leuenberger. One an ex-Swiss Barista Champion and now head roaster and the other a chef and master of fine foods. Their invitation to all of us to is to come into their world and experience their coffee and food. Hidden amongst the buildings of Zürich’s Kreis 5 is one of the cities most best kept café secrets, Auer & Co. It sits within the Impact Hub Zurich, where young entrepreneurs, creative minds and technical gurus come together to share ideas, tech talks and, of course, coffee!
Since opening it’s doors in late 2015, this place has been buzzing with great coffee at the hands of great Baristas. It’s no wonder, as those who are in the Zürich coffee scene know that this place is a coffee project of Bear Brothers & Cow team Benjamin Prager and Kai Keong. However you choose to spell it or say it, coffee lovers and freaks in Zurich are being spoilt by amazing coffee being served in some of the new, hip cafés in Zurich. One of which is sitting perfectly in the heart of Kreis 4 at Helvetiaplatz. Bankopened its doors earlier this year, with a lot of buzz and attention from the Zurich scene. It’s no wonder, with Benjamin Prager, one of Switzerland most talented coffee brewster as the Head of Coffee and local roastery Stoll supplying the golden beans. Speciality Coffee freaks of Switzerland will already be familiar with the crew at Benzin & Koffein. Since 2014, they have been spoiling their coffee loving visitors with amazing coffee direct from their roastery, Gipfelstürmer Kaffee. Located in Zurich’s hip Kreis 3, this is the perfect place for an espresso pit-stop during a Sunday afternoon run. We all know that an espresso before a run gives you the energy you need to reach your running goal. Winter has finally arrived in Zurich! The perfect time of year to explore the city for that cosey little café that you are going to make home – well at least for a few hours. Whether you are visiting for the weekend, or wandering through this fabulous city which is home, one place to stop at is Café Mohrenkopf. This little café and restaurant, located in the heart of Niederdorf (Zurich’s old town), has been welcoming visitors for over 30 years. It’s name Mohrenkopf (a kind of chocolate coated marshmallow) gives a big hint on what you will find inside – lots of yummy Mohrenkopf’s to have with your coffee. 2015 has seen an explosion of building and activity around Zurich’s main station. Wander down the railway tracks along Lagerstrasse through Zurich’s new lifestyle oasis, Europaallee. As you wander by the little boutique’s and eateries, you will eventually meet Gustav. Gustav Café opened it’s doors during the summer of 2015. New, fresh and ready to win over the heart’s of coffee lovers. I wonder what is hidden inside this little coffee place. Would Gustav sweep me away with his perfect espresso and leave me wanting more? The news is spreading fast – Kiwi sighting on one of Zürich’s most famous alternative streets, Langstrasse! Cafe New Zealand opened its doors in April and since opening, has been causing quite a stir. Ok – this is not difficult on Langstrasse.
As with most new cafes, I thought I would give Sam – the Cafe NZ man – a few weeks to settle in before hitting him with my visit. As an Aussie-Italian, I was curious of what the coffee experience would be like. Italians love their espresso as much as Aussies love their Flat Whites, and Sam serves both. Can a Kiwi really serve a grand espresso and creamy Flat White (which we all know is Australian and is now hipper than hip!)??
I took the bus down good ol’ Langstrasse, hopped off at Militar-Langstrasse, blew off a few wolf whistles and walked in….
