C’est si Espresso at Salon

Salon Ah Spring! Flowers blooming, birds are singing and Zürich tram line construction begins..again. It’s the time of year when we usually put away the winter coats, shed our winter skin and explore the city.. in the search of the grand espresso, of course! Spring hasn’t sprung yet but don’t let that stop you from taking a stroll out of the city center to Kreis 3. A little walk away from Bahnhof Enge, down the colored streets around Weststrasse is Salon. The sign reads Salut and the vibe speaks retro-French. Will this strickingly cool café knock Grande off No.1 place for best espresso in Zürich? With my derrière comfortably seated in the old cinema seats outside, I was more than ready to find out.

Atmosphere: C’est Si Bon. Arriving at Salon, first instinct is to find a place to sit outside. Yes the old cinema seats are comfy. This place gets great sun (when it shines) and is perfect for that catch-up coffee, that afternoon take me away from work break, evening drinks (big Gin selection) and brunch. Inside you are greeted by a very cool bar and the whole retro interio and french ‘Salon’ ambience is impressive. As Yves Montard sings in his 1949 hit- This is so good! As an Aussie/Italian, I was facinated by Salon. My quick research on ‘Salon‘ bought up the main themes of urban setting, italian invention of the 16th century, exchange of ideas, conversation, influencial women – yes can see the correlation. However, after 4 visits to this Salon one thing that I am yet to find is an inspiring host and team. Salon team – help us to get Zürich on the world coffee city map and give us a smile and some happy service.

Espresso rating: 4.0 out of 5
Back to the main discovery here, the espresso! The picture really says it all. A beautiful Dalla Corte machine delicately produces an espresso which is creamy, corto, forte and memorable. It was joy to see this creamy golden brown creation, with the chocolate almost spicey, nutty aroma. To taste, very smooth and familiar, with a little amaro trail at the end. Ah Cafe Noir it was good to experience you again here at Salon! Unfortunately, on one of my visits, the espresso was more warm than hot, however I am sure the team will be quicker next time.
